More pages than Wikipedia

12 Jan 2009 09:49

Yesterday I noticed a significant milestone of Wikidot.com compared to Wikipedia.org:

Wikidot has more pages than the english version of Wikipedia!

Pro accounts and a few ideas

18 Dec 2008 11:47

pro.png

I was too busy and then too tired to write a post yesterday — but yes, we did manage to introduce Pro accounts at Wikidot.com yesterday. And even more — have already had a few sales. Also we have received very positive feedback from our Users, Friends and Customers.

Pro accounts tomorrow - will shave my beard

16 Dec 2008 21:35

Tomorrow is the big day for Wikidot.com and our Team — we will officially make Pro accounts available to our users.

So far Wikidot has been free and our revenue came mostly from online advertising. But obviously there are a few problems associated with the model of "provide free service, monetize the traffic":

7 apps that make jailbreaking the iPhone (still) worth it

30 Nov 2008 23:40

It looks like there are about 10 000 apps in the App Store now. But there are still a few very good reasons to jailbreak your iPhone. There are at least 7 applications that will never make it into the official App Store and available only through the jailbreaking process.

In the "old times" users of the firmware 1.x could only use either applications bundled by Apple (not too many, mostly Safari, Mail, Calendar, Calculator) or use "web apps" through the mobile Safari browser. Of course clever developers (hackers) found a way to install 3rd party apps on iPhones. It required the user to "jailbreak" the phone, often also combined with "unlocking" (making cellular network-independent). It is being estimated that about 10% of 1st generation iPhones were unlocked in the pre-3G era.

Use the new Wikidot front theme on your Wiki in 5 easy steps

27 Nov 2008 08:55

Yesterday our team introduced a new design for our front page at Wikidot.com. We are getting many positive feedback about it. Thanks!

Many people were also asking us if it is possible to use the new theme on their own pages. Well, we are going to make a regular theme based on the new design, but if you are impatient and want to live on the bleeding-edge (like me) here is how I did it. No CSS knowledge is required and the result is instantaneous with just a few steps to complete.

The general idea is to create a new custom theme for Wiki and in the CSS definition import the CSS file from the front-page design. You will also need to add a few modifications, just copy&paste.

Productive! Magazine

25 Nov 2008 08:22

A few days ago a friend of mine, Michał Śliwiński, released the first issue of the new Productive Magazine. Michał is the founder of NOZBE, a web application that helps you manage your to-do lists, tasks and projects in the Getting Things Done (GTD) philosophy.

Why I think the iPhone firmware 2.2 is (a bit) broken

22 Nov 2008 00:21

Today Apple has released new firmware v 2.2 for their iPhone. Of course immediately I have rushed to upgrade my phone, although I knew that I would loose my jailbreak and a few really useful apps (like Terminal, Scrobbler, Stumbler Plus and a few others).

Honestly I was tempted by the new wireless podcast download option — I am really tired of synchronizing over cable every morning to get the freshest episode of Buzz Out Loud to listen to it on my way to the office. In fact it really makes me mad that I need to connect the phone to my Mac to get new podcasts. Almost everyone hates it.

The blogs are full of the new firmware 2.2 reviews, but actually there are a few things I hate about the new iPhone.

Moving static content to CloudFront

18 Nov 2008 10:59

For the last couple of weeks we are thinking of ways to make Wikidot.com faster, more responsive and more scalable. Personally I am fascinated with Amazon's web services, particularly :

I can see those services as a natural environment for future Wikidot hosting, but this is not exactly what I wanted to write about.

Today Amazon has announced another service, CloudFront — a damn easy to use Content Delivery Network.

New Wikidot Theme

30 Oct 2008 20:47

flickr:2987643762

Wikidot insider sneak preview: Wikidot awaits a major graphical redesign. What we are currently working on is a totally new front page for www.wikidot.com — cleaner, more organized, more friendly… Just better.

Lukasz has been working on it for a while, but this picture was taken when he just started 2 weeks ago, this is why he is smiling — he looks much worse now after 24th iteration of the theme and generating another set of buttons ;-)

Devcamp 1

30 Oct 2008 08:04

flickr:2977845556

Last Saturday we had a "barcampish" meeting in Torun, the city where we live and work. We have called it devcamp. The basic idea was to gather developers, local companies, enthusiasts, geeks, bloggers etc. Well, and it was a pretty nice success! We were able to get ~70 people to come.

Wikidot was one of the organizers of the event, together with another local company, MGA.

Is this O.K. to attach ads to user-generated content?

24 Sep 2008 15:34

It's about free web services that earn money from ads placed on user-generated content pages. This is exactly how Wikidot.com could earn money and how Wordpress.com and thousands of others are generating their revenue. Some people have nothing against it, some would never use a service with such ads.

G1, powered by Android, is announced - move on

24 Sep 2008 07:16

Since I am a bit geek- and gadget-guy, I have been trying to follow the development of Android (the mobile platform by Google) since its announcement. Yesterday the first commercial phone, G1 by HTC, has been announced at a press conference by T-Mobile.

I did watch it live. But right after that I felt simply disappointed. You can watch it yourself. If you do not bother watching the whole video, a nice live blog is available by Gizmodo.

T-Mobile G1 Details Leak

23 Sep 2008 07:07

Today is the day that T-Mobile announces an iPhone-like phone, G1, powered by Google's Android — open source OS for mobile phones. Android itself is a very interesting, but quite a controversial project.

Anyway, without going into details of Android, I have just read unofficial leaks available now at TmoNews, also through TechCrunch and now dozens of blogs worldwide.

Barcamp.pl in Poznań - impressions

21 Sep 2008 21:42

As many of you already know, Wikidot (the company) is based in Poland, Torun. And I really like going to various meetings, conferences and workshops organized locally. In fact, there are plenty of meetings related to "Web 2.0" and a lot has changed in the last 2 years here in Poland in the local Internet.

Anyway, on Saturday we decided to visit Barcamp.pl meeting in Poznań. Short summary? It was awesome. Clearly confirmed that the state of Internet in Poland more or less follows global trends.

Blogging... is nice

18 Sep 2008 14:37

Photo4.jpg

Finally I have decided to start blogging. There are a few reasons: blogs are popular, a blog can be a place to publish my ideas and hopefully some people would read it and comment. A blog is something I have been missing for a long time — a lot of ideas come through my mind and without a single place to publish they are often lost either somewhere on forums, various websites, or even inside my own notebooks, never published on the net.
